IGN: Given the fates of a few choice characters, we're assuming you viewed this as a one-time gig? ZOMBIE: Oh, yeah, I definitely looked at this always as a one-off. So in this killing-machine of a person, that was the one last thread of humanity left in him. So he's just in search of a sister who, of course, has no idea who he is…And so when she turns on him, he's just going to destroy everything. But the only thing in his mind that's left is this bizarre, psycho-obsessive memory of his baby sister.

IGN: To your estimate, what is the relationship between Michael and his sister? ZOMBIE: I played it from the point of view that Michael's emotional development ended when he was ten years old.

I couldn't make a statement with this movie if I'd been concerned with the others. I was never worried about what had taken place in the other movies. So I thought that the only way to make that character exciting again would be to flip it upside down and make it a character that you're now involved with. They've already done that with seven sequels that degenerate in quality with each one. So, in a sense, you can't re-demystify something. But then they made seven damn sequels, so that character has pretty much been destroyed. I mean, in Halloween, Michael is a complete mystery. IGN: Given that each sequel gets less effective as you further demystify the character, did you have a fear that in providing that backstory, you risked explaining away the devil? ZOMBIE: I felt that it was ultimately the only possible way to go. But as we were shooting with the young actor who plays him - who is really, really great in this - I realized that it could have been completely compelling. I never thought that young Michael would be compelling enough to carry an entire movie. IGN: Was that approach something you'd initially considered? ZOMBIE: It wasn't really something that I thought of until we were filming. But people wanted to see Michael Meyers, which is why I really chose to dwell on him and Laurie consequently became a secondary character. I mean, I could have made the whole movie about young Michael and it could have ended with him killing his family and that, in itself, would have been a compelling enough story. But to take it from a different point of view and ask what this character is really about seemed the best route to take.

But that movie already exists, so I thought that to go back and do that again would be fairly stupid. John Carpenter's movie is a movie about a girl named Laurie Strode who is stalked by the Boogie Man. In the original movie, he's not a character he's a ghost. IGN: So what was your guiding principle in trying to reinvent this character? ZOMBIE: I just wanted to make him a character. But feeling that a prequel or sequel or any continuation was not really something I wanted to be involved with, the only thing I thought would work would be a remake or a fresh start. I was approached with the idea of doing something involved with Halloween. IGN: Was this an idea that originated from your appreciation from the first film, or were you approached to do this? ZOMBIE: It wasn't anything I'd ever thought about.
